The People’s Postal Rescue Campaign
The postal service is under threat. COVID-19 has caused revenues to plummet while simultaneously increasing costs, compounding deeper fiscal woes. Some in the government want to use the crisis to privatize this essential service.
Millions rely on the USPS for vital medicines. The post office is a lifeline in rural communities. Today it employs over 600,000 Americans and more than 100,000 veterans. These jobs are on the line.
And at a time when voters fear gathering in person at polls, 34 states – Republican and Democrat-controlled alike – now allow no-excuse voting by mail. Without a U.S. Postal Service, there is no vote-by-mail.
#StandByYourMail is dedicated to getting the word out about the importance of the U.S. Post Office. Will you join us and share your testimonials, your pictures, your videos – and your enthusiasm for Americans’ overwhelmingly favorite federal agency?
Did you know?
✉ The USPS delivers 145 billion pieces of mail every year, compared to 5.5 billion for UPS and 4 billion for FedEx. That’s 226,000 items per USPS letter carrier, compared to 11,800 and 11,200 among its private competitors.
✉ The USPS – one of the first truly equal opportunity employers - created a path to the middle class for Black America and for other minorities, and jobs for retiring members of the armed services. One in five postal workers is African-American, and 100,000 are veterans.
✉ The USPS is bound by the “universal service obligation,” which requires it to visit every household six days a week? Private carriers are not so obliged, and rely on the USPS to deliver their packages for the last steps of the journey.
✉ The USPS has the deck stacked against it. In 2006 Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which requires the USPS to pre-fund the pension and healthcare costs for retirees for the next 75 years. Since the Act was passed in Congress, the USPS went from making a profit to losing money.
✉ The USPS is consistently ranked Americans’ favorite government agency in Pew and Gallup polls.
✉ Postal workers take an oath to protect the Constitution. They don’t just deliver the mail. They serve their communities, bringing people together in the most divisive times. Can you imagine your town without them?
Abandoning the U.S. Post Office will sever the ties linking every household nationwide. This vital public service is our common thread.
